Screening
Eunseo│Grand Prize
Category
Fiction
Running Time
29min
Release Date
2019
Director
Park Joon-ho
Plot
Eunseo, who came to South Korea 20 years ago, has now adapted enough to forget that she is from North Korea. However, as her mother arrives in South Korea 20 years later, Eunseo’s ‘identity’ is revealed. It was just a brief moment of happiness. Soon, Eunseo resents her mother. Eunseo is original in terms of breaking the typical North Korea defector films such as ‘the narrative of suffering they experience in South Korea.’ Instead, the film reveals the shallow prejudice that South Koreans have against others as they enter into a multicultural society. Can we truly live together as we recognize the differences with ‘them’? This is an urgent issue.
Proxy Exam
Category
Fiction
Running Time
27min
Release Date
2019
Director
Kim Na-kyung
Plot
After all, her North Korean defector parents who escaped to China passed away, Hyun-joo stays in South Korea. However, due to her parents’ death, she cannot prove her nationality and Hyun-joo becomes a stateless person. She wants to go to her favorite idol’s fan meeting, but it is impossible to apply. In exchange for taking Joo-hee’s Chinese competency test, Hyun-joo borrows her identity for one day. Proxy Exam highlights the members of the South Korean society that have not thought of the second generations of North Korean defectors. The situation of Hyun-joo, having nothing guaranteed by law, is a sore space of the system of our society. A simple film that points out the poignant reality.
AC in Panmunjeom
Category
Fiction
Running Time
24min
Release Date
2018
Director
Lee Tae-hun
Plot
The air conditioner in T2 in Panmunjeom, the main conference room for the Military Armistice Commission, is broken. The problem is the outdoor heat exchanger. But the worst part is that it’s in the North. Will the repairman go to the North to fix it or will he give up? Or will he find a peaceful solution? It may be perceived as a comical incident, but AC in Panmunjeom evokes the undeniable reality of separation. That is why the broken air conditioner is a symbolic representation, and the film demonstrates how hard it is to fix it. A metaphorical film about “the dangerous reality despite the outcome of the peace talks”. The ending with the wind on T2 still resonates.
